At Fishy's Friends Rescue, we're not afraid to dig deep. We’re paws-itively committed to changing the future for dogs in Oklahoma and beyond—and that means tackling pet overpopulation at the root.

It’s tempting to think, “Let’s just build more shelters!” After all, more space means more saved dogs, right?
Not quite.

Building more shelters without addressing what’s causing the overflow is like trying to mop up a flood while the faucet’s still running. The real fix? Stopping unwanted litters before they ever begin.

Every year, millions of dogs and cats enter shelters. Some are lost, some surrendered, but many are born into a world that simply doesn’t have enough homes waiting for them. And while shelters and rescues like ours are doing tail-waggingly hard work to help, the truth is we just can’t adopt our way out of this crisis.

There aren’t enough homes, there aren’t enough foster couches, and there are only so many biscuits to go around.

That’s why we’ve shifted our impact model: from reactive rescue to proactive prevention.

People Want to Help—But Systems Get in the Way

Even the most pup-loving humans are often restricted by things out of their control:

Rental and HOA pet limits
Breed-specific rules
Local ordinances
Sky-high costs of vet care, food, and pet insurance

Add in rising inflation and stretched budgets, and we’ve seen heartbreaking situations where families are forced to give up beloved pets—not because they don’t care, but because they can’t afford the care.

More Shelters = More Space? Not Really.

Here’s the leash-length truth: more shelters don’t mean fewer animals in need. They often mean more overhead, more strain on already-exhausted staff, and fewer resources per pup.

The cycle just keeps turning:

More dogs born
More dogs end up in shelters
More space needed
Repeat

Unless we stop the cycle at the source, we’ll always be overwhelmed. Always outnumbered. And animals will always pay the ultimate price.

Compassion Fatigue: The Silent Weight of Rescue Work

At Fishy's Friends Rescue, our mission isn't about choosing the easiest path — it's about choosing the ones most in need. We specialize in saving dogs who have been feral, abused, abandoned, or forgotten — the ones many others turn away. These dogs are not blank slates. They come with stories written in fear, pain, neglect, and survival. They also come with a desperate desire to be loved, even if they don't know it yet. This is some of the most challenging and important work in animal welfare — and it comes at a cost that many don’t talk about: compassion fatigue.

Compassion Fatigue: The Silent Weight of Rescue Work

Compassion fatigue is the emotional and physical exhaustion that comes from caring for others, especially those who are suffering. In animal rescue, it sneaks in when you least expect it. Foster caregivers often bear the emotional weight of the trauma that the dogs carry. This secondary trauma builds up slowly and can feel like burnout, sadness, guilt, or even hopelessness.

You pour your heart into a dog who cowers at the sound of your voice. You work for weeks to earn a wag of the tail. You clean up accidents, manage barking and reactivity, miss sleep, cry when they regress. And through all of it, you still show up. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Here's how fosters and rescuers can protect their emotional well-being:

1. Know Your Limits
You can't help others if you're drowning. Say "yes" when you can, and "not this time" when you need to. You're not failing — you're honoring your boundaries.

2. Take Breaks Without Guilt
Rest is not giving up. It's preparing for the next dog who needs you. Recovery is a part of the work.

3. Find Your People
Talk to someone who gets it — another foster, rescue team member, or therapist. Sharing the weight makes it lighter.

4. Celebrate Small Wins
Every tail wag, every relaxed breath, every moment of trust is progress. Celebrate it like you won the lottery.

5. Build In Self-Care Rituals
Daily walks, baths, journaling, hobbies — whatever fills your cup. Make it as routine as feeding the dog.

6. Keep Learning
Understanding trauma and dog behavior gives you confidence. It helps you respond with empathy instead of frustration.

7. Talk About Mental Health
Rescue culture needs space for hard conversations. Let’s normalize checking in with each other — and ourselves.

“You cannot pour from an empty cup.” Your mental health matters just as much as the dogs’ healing.

Healing Takes Time: Working with Traumatized Dogs

Some rescues focus on puppies with a clean slate, or adoptable breeds that fly off the shelter floor. That’s important work. But at Fishy's Friends, our focus is different. We take the long-haul cases — the scared, the aggressive, the shutdown, the neglected. Dogs who have never known a kind hand. Dogs who flinch at leashes. Dogs who see the world as a threat.

We ask people to consider this: If you were beaten, abandoned, and left to survive on your own, would you be well-behaved and trusting? These dogs aren’t broken. They’re hurting.

Research shows that trauma has a lasting impact on canine behavior. It can manifest as fear, aggression, withdrawal, or hypervigilance. According to a study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science , over 30% of dogs are surrendered due to behavior issues — many of which stem from trauma and lack of socialization.

Foster care plays a huge role in reversing that damage. A study highlighted by Maddie’s Fund showed that dogs placed in foster homes displayed fewer signs of stress and anxiety. Even short-term fostering helped them decompress and adapt to home life.

We also utilize trauma-informed care — an approach used in human psychology that is just as powerful in animal care. It’s the practice of recognizing that behaviors come from pain, not defiance. We take things slow. We respect thresholds. We don’t force. We earn.

We are attending an upcoming adoption event in OKC May 3rd and this story is a perfect example of that beautiful unity in action!

This week, we were delighted when a charming small business reached out to us with a heart full of generosity and a simple yet powerful offer: to partner with us and donate a portion of their proceeds back to rescue efforts at an adoption event. These are the moments that remind us how much good exists in the world.

The business? A delightful nut vendor with an even nuttier (and cuter!) story. Meet So Stumped! —a small batch roasted nut company born from the love of family, togetherness, and cinnamon-sugary joy. What started as a recipe shared with family and friends grew into a mission-driven brand committed to delivering comfort, sweetness, and quality in every bite. And yes—the name came from a hilarious brainstorm moment where they literally said, "We might as well call it So Stumped!" as we just can't decide and the perfect nutty name. (And we’re so glad they did.)

What makes this partnership extra special is the heart behind it. Just like us, So Stumped! faced challenges and roadblocks. But they kept pushing forward—one delicious batch at a time. Their journey, much like ours in rescue, is about not giving up even when it’s tough, and that shared determination is what makes this collaboration so meaningful.

If I could give just one tip to anyone fostering a rescue dog, it would be this: language matters.

"The words we use shape how others see these dogs—and more importantly, how they see themselves as potential adopters.

Not long ago, someone described one of our fosters, Boris, as aggressive.

I immediately paused and asked for clarification.

Why? Because Boris isn’t aggressive. He’s reactive.

There’s a world of difference between the two, and that distinction could make or break his chances of finding a forever home.

Reactive dogs are often overwhelmed by new environments, overstimulated by certain triggers, or unsure how to process excitement, fear, or uncertainty.

Aggression implies intent to harm.

Boris? He’s just figuring out the world—like so many rescue dogs learning to trust again.

This is where the 3-3-3 rule of fostering comes in.

3 Days to decompress.
3 Weeks to settle in.
3 Months to fully bloom.

Throughout those phases, dogs change. They evolve. They show you glimpses of who they were before the trauma and who they might become with love, stability, and guidance.

As fosters, our job is more than feeding, walking, or playing.

It’s observing, communicating, and telling a story that sets each dog up for success.

Potential adopters deserve clarity. Especially when it comes to breeds with working dog energy, herding instincts, grooming demands, or high drive personalities.

We owe it to the dogs and the families to be honest, detailed, and compassionate in how we describe behaviors, needs, and quirks.

Many of our fosters open their homes to pups who have been dumped, neglected, or mistreated, and while the journey from trauma to trust can be bumpy, it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences you'll ever have. Here’s what every foster should know to confidently welcome a dog who's learning how to feel safe again.

1. Understanding Trauma in Rescue Dogs

Many rescue dogs come from heartbreaking situations that leave invisible scars. Whether they were neglected, abandoned, abused, or simply undersocialized, trauma affects each dog differently. Some may shut down completely, while others may display signs of fear-based aggression or extreme anxiety. As a foster, understanding that your new pup is reacting to a world that once failed them is the first step in helping them heal. Compassion and patience go a long way in building the foundation for recovery.

2. Setting Up for Success at Home

Before your foster dog walks through the door, preparing your space can make all the difference. Create a calm, quiet decompression zone where they can retreat without pressure.
